| Bristow Manor | 1 | I played this course with a 4 pm tee time on Sunday 6/17/07 for 25.00. All 18 holes were completed at a decent value. Played from the middle tee's. Only recommend the tips for single digit handicapers. Bristow Manor is a very good test of golf. It is fair, but you need to play it a few times to manage your way around the course. Hitting the ball in the rough will cost you dearly. It is a links style course and your chances of finding your ball is slim to none. So please either bring extra balls or hit the ball in the fairway. You have two of the toughest back to back holes anywhere in the region. Numbers 7 and 8 can really ruin your day...bogey is a decent score average for both those two holes. 7 is a dog leg right par 4, 438 yards...With Water on the right and a hazard carry over to a well bunkered green. Then you go to number 8 and have a 196 to 206 yard par 3...again hitting over hazards to the green on the other side....extremely difficult green to hit. The Condition of the course was fair. I was a little disappointed that the 16th par 5 had burn't fairways at the beginning of the dogleg landing area where there was some bare spots. Overall though BRISTOW MANOR is an enjoyable experience and will test your game....
**** Ospreys was favorably rated by earlier reviews*** And I cannot disagree more...That is one of the most unfair layouts in Golf ... and I have played a lot of courses. Ospreys has too many blind shots where a decent Tee Shot can be rewarded with a bad hop O.B. .... If you are interested in playing Ospreys...play on a weekday with less crowds... This course can easily get backed up...and it is the least enjoyable Target type of golf course that I can think of.... | 6/19/2007 | kphipps |
| Bristow Manor | 4 | I played it yesterday in a scramble event. Overall, I enjoyed the course. The greens were in solid shape. Not slow by any means, but fast enough so that they were a challenge with pins on tricky slopes. The pins were tough but not unfair.
The bunkers seemed a bit dicey. Not much in the way of sand in some bunkers.
The rough was interesting. There are areas about 110 yards into the rough that are not mowed at all. I guess they are going for a certainly links look, but it just looks like areas that you deserve to loose a ball in if you hit it there. The thigh deep rough serves no purpose. It doesn't make the course look better or frame any holes. It just appears that they saw such rough on tv at Pinehurst #2, Shinnecock and Bethpage and thought, "we should have some of that". In some cases, becaue the holes are so tight or short, it actually detracts from the hole.
There are also several holes that the fairways run out for no reason. The 18th hole has a fairway that disappears at the 150 marker and reappears at the 130 marker, leaving 20 yards of rough. There is no reason for it. The ground between the two fairways is fine. They just don't have fairway there. There is a par 5 that does the same thing, forcing long hitters to hit 3 woods rather than drivers off the tee. In fact, I only hit 1 drive off a par 5. There is al par 4's that the fairway does not go to the green. The fairway ends 100 yards before the green. Again, there is no reason for it as the land between the fairway and green could easily be mowed into fairway. It just appears the greenskeeper wants to take drivers and 3 woods out of the players hand.
There is a good variety of length on the course for par 3s, 4 and 5's. Depending upon what tees you play, the course can play short or long. No player should have difficulty finding the right set of tees for their ability level.
There are situation where from the tee a player has no idea how far a player has to clear water, bunkers or what the distance to a layup area is. There were no GPS on the carts, and if a course ever needed a yardage book, it was this one.
Still, I played the course with people who played it previously so they were able to show me where to hit it and what club to pull. It is a good course in excellent shape this May. It looks like they might let the fairways get a bit longer for the summer, so you might want to play it earlier rather than later in the year.
I will play it a few times before the end of June because I enjoyed it that much. It is a good challenege for any level of golfer. It forces you to hit every club in the bad and to hit the greens precisely. Bring a good chipping game as the greens were not easy to hold and the greens are a strength on this course. | 5/15/2007 | pengle |
